Mercedes-Benz and the Standards of Luxury

Lets go back in time and meet the supercar of the day. The 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540K, first released at the Paris Motor Show, was tailored specifically to each individual customer and only produced on special order in a range of bodies. Its 5.4 liter inline-8 cylinder could produces speeds up to 170kph leaving the rest of the competition in dust. As always, the power came with style and the car was known for its prominent hood, sleek sweeping fenders and recessed grill, and was one of the true beauties. Occasionally you’ll still find one of these beauties up for sale, being snatched up for more than $10 million at auctions, proving they truly embody the timeless value of the brand.

Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing

Two decades later those with a need for speed looked to the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, known as the “Gullwing” and issued between 1954 and 1957. It was the fastest car on the road, with speeds reaching 259kph and powered by an in-line six-cylinder engine that could produce 158 kW with petrol direct injection. The name ‘gullwing’ came from the design of the doors that opened in like the wings of the bird, though it was later offered in a roadster version.
